Gossip and inconsequentials in Mercer Island, Washington.
I thought I had your private email address, but for some reason I can’t find it. I have some ideas for you and wanted to discuss via email. Can you ping me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org ?
Hey there — Can you drop me a line? I want to talk to you about a ‘hood blogging beta I’m working on that you might be interested in.
Great blog! Your site was recommended as a great source of neighborhood information, so I wanted to check it out for myself. You’ve got loads of good information so I’ll be adding you to my list sites to visit regularly.
Best of Luck,
I agree with you that the presence of Tent City caught the neighborhood by surprise and out reach to us before decisions were made was non existent. I have no doubt that the process needs to be changed.
Now that Tent City has been with us for two months, I would be interested in your observations. Have you met the people? Have there been problems for the neighbors? Has anyone had a positive experience?
This really is getting to be the best source for news
and interesting discussions on Mercer Island
but don’t quote me
@Carol: Spurred by a deep sense of guilt for not following up on my earlier posts, I finally did meet the residents of Tent City. You can search the blog for “Tent City,” or find the post with photos here:
@bookseller friend: Thanks! Glad you like it.
“Surrounded by Water” has really come along
providing real news, photographs in a readable format. Please tell me how do I contribute Posts on Home Design subjects like this Google “Knol”-
Hi Jerry, just drop me a note at email@example.com if you’re interested in sending some info for the blog. It’s not a wiki-style blog, though My Mercer Island (on the blogroll) is if you’re interested in contributing there. But I’m always interested in profiling local businesses, so drop me a line.
I wonder how many Mercer Islanders saw this
picture in the Mercer Island Reporter lately and were as dismayed as I was. It’s even worse on the ground. Our CBD has been badly developed. JG
Ellie- Please insert the photos I eMailed you into my preceding Post and eliminate the bad link.
Hi JG! I can’t insert photos into a comment, sorry about that. Looks like your link is all good too. Thanks for visiting!
How do we get in touch?
@sports picks, just email me at mercerislandblogger @ yahoo.
I recently found your blog and fell in love. We have lived on Mercer Island for over 6 yrs now and have enjoyed every second of living here. It seems you are also relatively new to the “Rock” too.
In addition to your wonderful info / gossip blog, we really have enjoyed the Walk Mercer Island book. We have done all the trails and tell everyone to get the book – Great insider info.
Keep up the fantastic postings and photos; you are better than the MI Report! (Big wink)
Well, thanks K Bear! Glad you like it. And let me know if there are things you’d like to see here that you don’t. What’s your favorite walk by the way?
All the walks are wonderful and give you a real connection with the neighborhoods. We especially like North East Big Loop – highlights include a hidden duck pond, gorgeous houses and the highest peak on MI (hint, it is by the Library). We do sweat, or should I say “glow” a lot on this one too. Our next challenge is do them all reverse.
Just spotted this — a “road diet” in Des Moines that appears to have worked.
Play the great game of Chess?
Hi, liked this blog, will be back for more later.
Hi. I grew up on the Island in the 70’s and 80’s and I’m trying to find photos of the shopping center (7-11, Denny’s, Herfys) and the way the freeway used to be, above ground. I’m finding that any “historical” pictures are 50-100 years old. If you have any way to find photos from this time frame, please drop me a note. Thanks.
I am the administrative and marketing assistant at the community center on Mercer Island. I am working on a research project regarding Mercer View Elementary .
I was wondering if you could confirm a few things for me. I have three questions in particular that I am hoping you can provide insight to:
1. What are the years of operation for the school? My research says 1964 – 1979 (actual years of operation where students attended the school).
2. My research tells me that the MI School District closed Mercer View Elementary, and the City leased and renovated the site for the community center in 1980.
3. Did the school district have a logo between the years of Mercer View Elementary’s operation? Some sort of image that always appeared on awards, letterhead, etc. that represented the Mercer Island School District? Or did Mercer View Elementary have a special logo?
I would appreciate any information you can offer. Thank you very much!
I attended Mercer View Elementary from the year it opened, 1960′ until 1966. My family lived a block from the school on 81st ave. from 1955 until we moved to 76th ave., where I live today. I can tell you that it was built in 1959 and opened in 1960, but there was no letterhead or logo that I am aware of. Logos, mission statements and the like were inventions of the 80s and 90s. You are correct in that it was turned over to the city in 1979. I am still in touch with many of my classmates– we all grew up together and most of us graduated in 1972 from Mercer Island High School. We just had our 40th reunion at the VFW Hall. I still have most of our class pictures, and newspaper clippings from the time. If you are interested, contact me by email at Lsarchin@aol.com.
So glad to have found your blog especially since Mercer Island Patch seems to be about so much less than MI! You may have noticed the article in today’s Reporter about the library remodel. We’ve created a website about the project at http://www.libraryremodel.org. We have some concerns about the huge impact the current KCLS plan will have on our community. When you have a moment, check out the site. This really is an issue that will effect many on the Island.
Thanks and keep blogging. Loved your thoughts on your most recent blog. So sad to consider the loss of such an interesting Northwest home!
Good to have you reading! And thanks for bringing the library issue to my attention, I’ll blog it to help you get exposure for the issue.
We are relocating to the Seattle area and Mercer Island is high on our list of places to settle. I have been reading your blog and appreciate that you put it out, it has been very helpful! Can you give me any perspective on the schools on Mercer, specifically the middle and high schools? I understand there is an overcrowding issue, but for the most part do the kids like it? Are there major bullying or drug issues? I would really appreciate your insight and feel free to email me, if more convenient.
I am a single mother looking for work here on the island. There is a new business under renovation near the court house. Does anyone know anything about it, I would like contact the company to see if they have positions coming open here on the island.
Infect that would be a good blog, local employment opportunities for island residents.
Thanks for the question! I don’t know about it but will try to find out.
Hi Laura! I don’t have kids in the schools myself, but neighbors who do are generally very happy with them. According to US News & World Report, MIHS is #12 in the state of Washington. I don’t know how much I believe such lists, but generally MI schools are rated highly on them, and it is an independent data point.
Hi Ms. Woodie Halvorson– I don’t know about that business, but one of our commenters might. Good luck in your search! I do know that Homegrown is opening up in the old Stopsky’s location by Island Books, they may be looking to hire when they open.
I have found out that the new business is a large preschool. It is I think one of the national brand preschool type, but I am still looking for employment here on the Island. Any leads would be appreciated deeply.
Hi there! Glad to have you. I have an unusual case of hating sunshine and warm weather and have been stuck in San Diego, CA for my entire life! I know that sounds odd but it’s true. I wear sunglasses all the time and actually prefer gray, cloudy days as I feel depressed with the sun assaulting my skin. Also Love rain but we never see it here. So here’s my brief story related to MI (and why I found your blog). In 07, I finally made a huge decision and bought a 7 BR home on Maple Lane, MI. I was so excited to finally make this move and having six kids, we needed those bedrooms! Well, lo and behold, the very day escrow closed, I got a call from my son’s San Diego school counselor to rush over because he had threatened suicide over moving and leaving his friends!! Well! We were so scared and had to take this seriously so cancelled all plans and I think you know what happened to real estate at this time! We were now out of state landlords and rented it out, luckily! But I have hated every extra minute I have been held captive in San Diego and finally have another chance to possibly come there. My Maple Lane home doesn’t look as nice now after years of renting but we’ll see. Now imagine my shock when I started googling “living on Mercer Island” and find not only this E Coli stuff but tolls getting instated? So what’s going on there nowadays?? I’m gonna have to fly up and visit and see if it’s still the same Island I fell in love with when I purchased in 07! TERRIFIC blog here!!!! Again, glad to found you. I write humor blog and am clicking the follow button!!
Hello. Could I ask the owner of this blog to contact me? My name is Patrick Young, I am the Business Manager at the Northwest Yeshiva High School. Unfortunately, some photos from your post of 9/20/2010 of the vandalism of our school are suddenly the top photos returned on Google search results. These photos contain swastikas, and if there were any way that you could remove them from your post we would appreciate it. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 206-232-5272. Thank you.
