This just in from the City: Mercer Island was named a Playful City USA for the 3rd year in a row by KaBOOM!, a non-profit in Washington DC dedicated to saving play. A worthy goal!
At the adventure playground.
From the press release:
KaBOOM!, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy activity for children, selected Mercer Island as a Playful City USA community for its commitment to outdoor play. The organization recognized the City of Mercer Island for its work to create Adventure Playground at Deane’s Children’s Park (5500 Island Crest Way) and engage children in safe play in a natural outdoor setting.
Mercer Island’s Adventure Playground is one of only three “adventure playgrounds” in the country that provide children with the raw materials to construct their own play places.
Check out the City’s page on outdoor play, including an impressive list of papers about things like “nature deficit” and “the importance of unstructured outdoor play.”
