Best Thai on Mercer Island

When a friend who didn’t know we’d moved suggested getting Thai on Mercer Island, we knew something was up. Our expectations of eating out on Mercer Island had been limited to our patio. This is due mostly to the fact that in over 10 combined years living in the area, neither of us had eaten out at a restaurant on Mercer Island. Noah’s while house-hunting doesn’t count.

Pon Proem is some of the best Thai around Puget Sound. And when they say spicy, they mean it. We usually go for 4 or 5 stars out of 5, but at this place, 3 is “Very Spicy” and 5 is “good luck!” After crying our way through a meal of Tom Yum Gai soup and cashew chicken, we decided that we’d swallow our pride and downgrade from 4 to 3 next time.

Cashew chicken and Tom Yum Ga Soup. Mmmmm.

We’ve also had the Pad Thai, red curry, and spicy beef salad. Generally the portions are large, but the salad was a little small.

Pon Proem is at 3039 78th Ave. SE. They say they’ve been in this location for about 16 years. The waiters and waitresses are friendly, but here’s nothing special about the dining room, so we usually take it home now.

Are there any other great local places we’re missing?

    Pon Proem is the best….

    Yuzen on the South End!

  2. Wait a while for this, but the Roanoke Inn is terrific for brunch on a sunny day when you can sit outside. Split a breakfast burrito and bask in the sun with a beverage from the bar.

  3. I lol’d reading this post. I’m still looking for a Thai place with good roast duck curry…

Bahn, I’ll look out for the roast duck curry at Pon Proem, but Rom Mai Thia on Broadway at Mercer in Capitol Hill has great roast duck curry.

Jan- thanks for the tip. I’ve been up to the Roanoke once or twice, but I can’t wait for summer. I love basking in the sun with beverages from a friendly bar.
